which IKEA system is best for your project

IKEA’s array of virtual planners makes storage Tetris a total breeze. Arrange bases, then move, stack, or align them however you please to fit your space perfectly—the storage solutions are endless. Semihandmade works with IKEA’s Sektion, Godmorgon, and Besta systems, as well as the retired Akurum system, because they are specifically designed for common renovation projects and storage needs. Another reason to love them? These systems are highly versatile beyond their intended design. Want to use Sektion in your closet? Besta in your playroom? No problem. The best part is that Semihandmade fronts and doors, with matching trim and panels, make using these systems in unexpected ways feel even more custom.

IKEA’s Besta system does it best when it comes to convenient, versatile, compact storage. Everything from entertainment systems to credenzas and playroom storage options all fit the Besta bill. The storage combinations are almost endless, making it very easy to customize to specific dimensions. “Besta x Semihandmade delivers affordable, beautiful, custom-looking storage options for a multitude of use cases,” says Designer Hillary Calvert

When furniture can’t fulfill size or aesthetic requirements for a space, it offers a flexible option for any dimension. Semihandmade’s 36 different door and drawer styles extend Besta’s versatility to any look or style. What ultimately sets Besta apart from Sektion and Godmorgon is that Besta functions as both floating and freestanding storage, where Godmorgon and Sektion are strictly fasted or mounted to a wall.

This Besta credenza features Semihandmade Quarry Impression fronts. Designer Nicole Cole went the freestanding storage route to create a bespoke piece. Customizable dimensions make freestanding Besta storage a great option for everything from a buffet to a small bedside table.

Designer Hillary Calvert took playroom storage to the next level with this floating, mounted unit featuring Supermatte White Shaker fronts and Lewis Dolin hardware. “Besta was the right option for this project due to the amount of wall space we were working with,” Calvert says. The deep Besta cabinet bases fit perfectly within the room’s dimensions and created easy-to-grab playroom storage. She notes, “Sektion cabinets would have been too tall to fit under the client’s windows.” Keep the interior cabinets of large Besta frames like Calvert’s open or add shelving to customize internal organization

Sektion

Sektion’s versatility and variety lends itself to other rooms beyond the kitchen. These custom-feeling cabinets bump storage up a notch in everything from a sprawling primary bathroom to a modest bedroom closet. Take Designer Tara Dees of Olive Street Design, who transformed a mudroom project by seamlessly blending style and function with Semihandmade DIY Shaker and Smoke Impression fronts. Sektion allows for floor-to-ceiling storage in a way that Besta and Godmorgon can’t quite achieve.

Sektion is also a great foundation for building entertainment systems and creating office storage. It can satisfy the floor-to-ceiling approach or the floating shelves with lower cabinets route. Depending on what the space allows for, overall aesthetic goals, and storage needs, Sektion offers a flexible solution for rooms outside the kitchen.

Godmorgon

Design by Mikro Renovations

IKEA’s Godmorgon vanity unit is designed with all bathroom shapes and sizes in mind. Versatile dimensions make this under-the-sink storage system ideal for everything from tiny powder rooms to spacious primary baths. Godmorgon’s deep cabinet drawers provide ample space to store bathroom essentials and so much more. In addition, Semihandmade offers Godmorgon doors and fronts in every style to satisfy storage AND aesthetic goals.

Although most commonly used in bathrooms, Godmorgon is a perfect fit for under-the-sink storage throughout the home space. If a project calls for sink(s) and a vanity, Godmorgon has you covered.

This structural vanity base is budget-savvy without sacrificing design. Godmorgon floating vanities offer a timeless style that can be customized with trim and added legs. Use IKEA’s Bathroom Planner to easily determine what Godmorgon option is right for your project. It’s important to note that, unlike Sektion or Besta, IKEA sells and prices Godmorgon unit bases and fronts as complete sets. This means you’ll need to replace the standard fronts with your Semihandmade ones. The great news? Semihandmade drills Godmorogon doors and drawers the same as IKEA so that all fronts are super easy to pop on and off.
